Renowned Mathematician Holly Krieger Headlined Baylor Undergraduate Lecture Series

April 22, 2026

Baylor University's Department of Mathematics welcomed internationally recognized mathematician Dr. Holly Krieger as the featured speaker for the 15th Baylor Undergraduate Lecture Series in Mathematics, continuing a tradition that began in 2008 of bringing exceptional mathematical thinkers and teachers to campus.

Dr. Holly Krieger

Dr. Krieger, a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Murray Edwards College, is known for her contributions to arithmetic dynamics and complex dynamical systems. Her honors include an NSF postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, the Corfield Lectureship at Cambridge, the London Mathematical Society Whitehead Prize, and the American Institute of Mathematics Alexanderson Award. She is also a frequent guest on Numberphile, the popular mathematics YouTube channel with more than 5 million subscribers, where her videos have introduced general audiences to topics in dynamics and number theory.

The lecture series featured two events open to students and the broader community. The public lecture, "Loops, Chaos, and the Limits of Certainty," was held on April 22, 2026, in the Marrs McLean Science Building. In this accessible talk, Dr. Krieger explored how simple numerical rules can generate complex and chaotic behavior, with significant implications for modern technology.

The series concluded with a colloquium lecture, "A Tour of the Mandelbrot Set," presented on April 23, 2026, in the Sid Richardson Building. This lecture offered a deeper look at one of mathematics' most iconic objects, revealing unexpected structure and connections, including the appearance of the Fibonacci sequence.

The two lectures drew strong attendance and gave students and faculty a glimpse into research shaping the field today. Dr. Krieger's visit was a memorable addition to the academic year.
