ALEKS Placement Exam
ALEKS placement exams are used by the Baylor Math Department for placement into MTH 1320 Precalculus and MTH 1321 Calculus I.
Who must take ALEKS?
To register for MTH 1320 - Precalculus, you must meet at least ONE of the following criteria:
- A score of 550 or higher on the SAT Math section.
- A score of 22 or higher on the ACT Math section.
- A score of 61 or higher on the ALEKS math placement test.
So, for example, if you already have a qualifying SAT/ACT score (see above), you do NOT need to take ALEKS in order to register for MTH 1320.
To register for MTH 1321 - Calculus I, you must meet at least ONE of the following criteria:
- A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Precalculus exam.
- A score of 650 or higher on the SAT Math section.
- A score of 27 or higher on the ACT Math section.
- A grade of B- or better in MTH 1320 (taken at Baylor or via transfer credit).
- A score of 80 or higher on the ALEKS math placement test.
So, for example, if you already meet the first, second or third criteria above, you do NOT need to take the ALEKS exam in order to register for MTH 1321.
If you choose the ALEKS pathway for qualifying for MTH 1320 or MTH 1321, start as soon as possible since obtaining a qualifying score may take time. You have five attempts at the placement exam and access to a Prep & Learning Module for preparation. After each attempt, you must wait 24 hours and spend 3 hours in the module before retaking the exam. Early and dedicated effort will improve your chances of success in MTH 1320 or MTH 1321.
