B.S. in Mathematics
Purpose: To provide the student with a basic background in mathematics and to allow a student to place some emphasis on an area of mathematics that is closely related to engineering or the biological, physical, or social sciences. Students planning to attend graduate school in mathematics (or one of the many quantitative disciplines) are advised to pursue this degree.
Requirements for a B.S. in Mathematics:
Thirty-nine semester hours, six of which must be at the 4000-level, including the following:
- MTH 1321 - Calculus I
- MTH 1322 - Calculus II
- MTH 2311 - Linear Algebra
- MTH 2321 - Calculus III
- MTH 3300 - Foundations of Mathematics
- One of the following:
- MTH 3312 - Foundations of Combinatorics and Algebra
- MTH 4314 - Abstract Algebra
- One of the following:
- MTH 3323 - Introduction to Analysis
- MTH 4326 - Advanced Calculus I
- One of the following:
- MTH 3325 - Ordinary Differential Equations
- MTH 4312 - Cryptology
- MTH 4322 - Numerical Analysis
- 15 semester hours of 3000-4000 level MTH or STA courses.
- A grade of “C” or better in thirty-nine hours of MTH and STA courses used for the major.
- One of the Following Required Courses in Other Fields:
- CSI 1401 - Introduction to Programming I
- CSI 1430 - Introduction to Computer Science I
- STA 2450 - Introduction to Computing for the Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
*MTH 3318, 3340, and 3374 do not apply toward the mathematics major.
