2024 SIAM Texas-Louisiana Section Meeting: A Successful Gathering of Mathematicians
The Department of Mathematics hosted the 7th Annual Meeting of SIAM Texas-Louisiana Section successfully during October 11-13, 2024. This conference featured four plenary lectures, 42 mini-symposium sessions, and one poster session, attracting 323 participants and speakers from 74 institutions and industrial companies.
The plenary speakers were Dr. Per-Gunnar Martinsson from The University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Beatrice Riviere from Rice University, Dr. Carrie Manore from Los Alamos National Lab, and Dr. Hal Schenck from Auburn University. They presented on topics such as randomized numerical linear algebra, computational methods for biomedical models, mathematical models of infectious diseases, and the connections of synchronous dynamical systems and algebraic geometry, respectively.
The 42 mini-symposium sessions showcased 263 presentations by 252 speakers, covering a wide range of research topics, including numerical analysis, computational mathematics, spectral theory and orthogonal polynomials, statistical/Bayesian modelling, inverse problems, machine learning, model order reduction, data science, mathematical biology, and dynamical systems to theoretical fluid mechanics.
Conference organizers were particularly excited to see many emerging researchers from the Texas-Louisiana region, including postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students as well as high school teachers and students pursuing careers related to industrial, applied, and computational mathematics. A total of 50 poster presentations showcased excellent research results.
Special thanks were given to the local organizers, department staff, and Baylor graduate student volunteers for their efforts in making the event successful.
