The weekend of April 21st-22nd, Baylor hosted the University Interscholastic League’s (U.I.L.’s) Regional competitions, and the Math Dept’s own Dr. Amy Goodman is the Academic Director for this event. U.I.L. organizes academic, athletic, and music contests across the state of Texas. At Regionals, hundreds of high school students from the Houston, Austin, and DFW areas (and everywhere in between) travel to Baylor to compete in academic events, one-act play, tennis, and track-and-field. As the Academic Director, Dr. Goodman is in charge of hiring Contest Directors and student workers for all 19 academic events, scheduling facilities, and coordinating with Baylor’s Institutional Events Office to keep everything running smoothly. Among the Contest Directors for this event are Math faculty members Mr. Steve Cates (Number Sense), Mrs. Dana Gwynn (Spelling & Vocabulary), and retired faculty member Mrs. Charlotte Pisors, who directs 2 events (Calculator Applications and Mathematics). Winners from the Regional competitions go on to compete at State. For more information about Texas U.IL., visit https://www.uiltexas.org/, or to get involved, contact Amy_Goodman@baylor.edu.
